Here’s A Super Simple Way to Keep Your Laptop Screen Private

Because no one likes nosy neighbors

If you need proof that visual hacking — someone snooping over your shoulder while you’re using your smartphone or laptop — is a big problem, look no further than Tomb Raider. It’s not something Lara Croft needs to worry about, but it might have gotten her development team into trouble! In October of this year, the title for the third game in the rebooted series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, was leaked. Was the leak masterminded by an elite hacker, or someone who managed to sneak into Eidos Montreal’s headquarters? Nope! Nothing sophisticated — just good old snooping on the subway!

As we all know, it’s not a great idea to look at confidential work information when you’re out in public. But, with more and more of us working out in the field or on the go, sometimes we don’t have much choice. Fortunately, there’s a way to protect ourselves against snoops while still being able to look at private information wherever and whenever we need to. Better yet, it’s a solution as simple as the act of snooping itself — 3M’s physical privacy filters. With just a simple sheet, you can foil snoops and get back to work with confidence.

3M makes privacy filters for all sizes of screens, from desktop monitors to smartphones. All of them do the same thing — block your screen from the eyes of anyone looking from an angle. As long as you’re looking straight ahead at your screen, you’ll never know it’s there. Everyone else will get an eyeful of black (or gold, if you want to treat would-be snoops to a more pleasant failed visual hack attempt).

For a lot of us, our jobs ride on private information we have access to not being made public. That’s why visual hacking is so concerning — it’s a numbers game. Sophisticated hacking attempts sound scary, but they’re so difficult to pull off, odds are decent you won’t be made a target (at least we all hope). For visual hacking, all that’s needed is a pair of eyes — it’s easy and quick, meaning any of us can easily become a victim. 3M performed some experiments and found that when they sent out a snoop into businesses that agreed to be a part of the study, sensitive information was stolen 88 percent of the time. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like those odds.

The 3M privacy filters are simple, easy to apply, and could save your job! If you’re a big 2-in-1 laptop user like some of us, touchscreen-friendly versions of the larger filters can also be purchased. No matter what kind of device you use, 3M can help protect it from prying eyes, letting you get back to work in confidence — even on the subway.
