The most popular character from Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn was rumored to be getting a spinoff almost as soon as the movie came out and started raking in the cash. Last month, we heard rumors of another ensemble movie that would feature Harley Quinn and possibly the Birds of Prey, an all-girl group of DC superheroes. That movie has been confirmed as Gotham City Sirens by The Hollywood Reporter.
Gotham City Sirens is the name of a DC comic book series that ran from 2009 to 2011, chronicling the adventures of Batman villains Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy. There’s nothing in there to suggest that the Birds of Prey will be featured prominently, but movie adaptations on both the Marvel and DC side don’t always hew closely to the source material, so it’s still a possibility.
The report from The Hollywood Reporter confirms the movie’s title and that David Ayer will be back to direct. Earlier reports had Christina Hodson as the screenwriter, but this report says it’ll be Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who is writing Sherlock Holmes 3 and the upcoming Tomb Raider movie starring Alicia Vikander. Margot Robbie, who had already signed on for more movies in the Harley Quinn role, will star and co-produce.
