No one ever stays on top for long. Samsung’s being one-upped in the smart refrigerator game by LG, thanks to a new fridge with a bigger display and support for Amazon Alexa. Soon, you’ll be asking Alexa to order groceries for you from the comfort of your kitchen. Who needs to go outside, anyway?
The LG Smart InstaView refrigerator works the same way Samsung’s Family Hub fridges do. There’s a large display (this one is 29”) that runs LG’s webOS interface and can both show what’s inside the fridge and family stuff like notes, reminders, and to-do lists. You can knock twice on the fridge to make the display transparent, or use an app to check on the contents of the fridge thanks to a camera inside, which proves handy if you’re already at the store and can’t remember if you need milk.
But, the big win for LG is a partnership with Amazon to get Alexa in the fridge. That means the Smart InstaView fridge can operate like an Echo or any other Alexa speaker. Using voice commands near the fridge, users can play music, turn smart lights on or off, do voice searches, and a whole lot more. Most appropriately, you can use Alexa to order groceries from Amazon – makes sense once you’ve taken a peek inside to see what you need or have found a recipe you want to try.
We haven’t yet heard how much this refrigerator will cost or when it will be available, but for now it looks like it’ll only be available on LG’s four-door refrigerator.
