Mophie Juice Pack Air (iPhone 7 Plus) Review

Mophie’s jump into wireless charging goes well!

Do you find yourself constantly looking for a place to charge your phone during the day? Until iPhones come with longer lasting batteries, this is a frustration that we all have to cope with. Fortunately there is a simple solution, battery cases! While there a number to choose from, Mophie has been leading the pack in making quality battery cases for several years, and the Juice Pack Air case for the iPhone 6 generation was one of our favorites. Their newest Juice Pack Air case for the iPhone 7 Plus is no exception, adding wireless charging to the mix.

When you first put the case on your phone you’ll be instantly impressed by the smooth exterior. Of course there is a bit of extra weight and thickness, but that’s a fair trade off for the hours of extra use you’ll get. The specs say that the 2,420 mAh battery adds up to 60% of a full charge, for a total of up to 33 hours. That should get help many users to get through the day without needing to stop for a recharge.

But inevitably even the battery in the case will run down and will need to be recharged. This is where the Mophie Juice Pack Charge Force wireless base really makes this case stand out from the rest. In order to recharge your phone and the case, all you need to do is set the phone down on the charger. Yep that’s it! It does the rest. In fact, as you set the phone on the base, little magnets inside the case will hold it in place and charging will begin automatically. You’ll soon wish everything had wireless charging technology. Granted, some other phones on the market have this ability built into them, but for us iPhone users, this is something new. And we love it! We should also mention that the phone does not need to be perfectly aligned on the base in order to charge as is the case with some other phones. The Charge Force tech will allow charging to take place at any angle as long as it is lying flat.

However, should you need to charge using a cable, there is one provided for you. And it’s a smart charger as well. When plugged into a computer, it will first charge the phone itself and then proceed to charge up the battery in the case. Now this cable has a Micro USB connector, which is not a problem unless you’d like to use Apple’s wired headphones, which have a Lightning connector. In that case you are out of luck. On their website Mophie recommends the use of Bluetooth headphones to avoid any inconvenience.

At any time you can press the small button on the back of the case and one to four of the LEDs will illuminate to give you an idea of how much charge is left. Then, in order to use the case to charge the phone, just press and hold that same button and charging will begin. Press and hold for a moment to stop the charge.

What else can we say about the case? As we mentioned above it is made from a very smooth plastic and the two pieces of the case fit together seamlessly. All the buttons continue to work well. The mute button has a cutout that is a little tricky to switch, but not overly so. At the base, there are dual forward facing speaker ports to avoid any loss in sound. And from our tests we didn’t notice any significant loss of volume. The camera opening is large and has no obstructions. However, keep in mind that due to the different camera lens location, this case will NOT work with an iPhone 6 Plus. The case itself comes in five colors (black, gold, rose gold, navy and red).
