I’ll confess I haven’t thought about Captain Underpants in a long, long time, but I do remember him being a mainstay on my reading list back in the middle school days. I know I wasn’t the only one. Well, Dav Pilkey’s sort of superhero has been due for a movie for a while, but delays stopped up the project for years. Consider the toilet unclogged — the first trailer for Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie was released today.
The two main characters, George and Harold, will be voiced by Kevin Hart and Thomas Middleditch, while Ed Helms gets the honor of voicing irritable principal turned not-really superhero turned actual superhero Captain Underpants. Looks like the movie will follow the path of the books from the early 2000s — the two aspiring comic book writers create Captain Underpants on the page before hypnotizing their principal to create the hero in real life. It also means we’ll see long-running villain Professor Poopypants, as if it could’ve been any other way. No word on Wedgie Woman, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed.
It was a tough road getting here. DreamWorks acquired the rights to make a Captain Underpants movie in 2011, and by 2014 the cast (which has remained unchanged) was announced. But, DreamWorks had a rocky 2015, and outsourced the animation for Captain Underpants before the studio was acquired by Comcast/NBCUniversal the following year. Things have finally been straightened out, and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is all set to arrive in theaters on June 2 of this year.
