New Thor: Ragnarok Trailer Pits Thor Against the Hulk, Gladiator Style

Looks like Thor won’t have the help of his hammer, Mjolnir, either.

The latest trailer for Thor: Ragnarok is out, and it’s comic bookish in all the right ways. From outrageous outfits to huge battles to a Colosseum-style face-off between Thor and the Hulk, it’s looking like Marvel’s upcoming adventure will be one of the most fun yet.

In case you were somehow wondering whether or not Ragnarok was going to be one of the more serious Marvel movies, the spot starts out with Thor doing an actual freeze frame “I’ll bet you’re wondering how I got into this mess” bit. From there, we get a good idea — Thor loses Mjolnir, then gets captured and handed over to Jeff Goldblum’s fantastic take on the Grandmaster. That leads to Thor doing a Maximus, and getting really excited when a “friend from work” (the Hulk) ends up being his opponent.

It looks like a fun break from the overarching Marvel storyline, but from the looks of things, Ragnarok could have one big effect on the MCU — Hela. Cate Blanchett will be playing the Asgardian goddess of death (sweet headgear, missing from the set shots, officially included), but she could end up being a bit more — depending on how fast and loose the MCU plays with the comics, she could be intimately tied to the universe’s overarching villain, Thanos. Seeing as how she shatters Mjolnir with one hand, you have to figure she’ll have a big part to play in the next few movies.

But, that’s all still a year away. Until then, we can enjoy would should be a pretty spectacular popcorn movie. It won’t be coming out during blockbuster season, though — Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3.
