Even before Sense8 was cancelled by Netflix, fans were spearheading Twitter campaigns to get the show renewed. The show was cancelled despite fan pleas, which only got louder since then. Well, this week, Netflix wanted to let fans know that they’ve heard their cries — and that that’s still not going to save their show.
In a Facebook post on the show’s page published yesterday, Netflix thanked fans for their support, but ultimately stated, “The reason we’ve taken so long to get back to you is because we’ve thought long and hard here at Netflix to try to make it work but unfortunately we can’t.” That, unfortunately, seems to be that.
There was some hope that the fan offensive might actually pay off. Last month, NBC decided to give Timeless a partial season after the decision to cancel the show was met with fan protest, giving Sense8 fans some hope that they could pull off the same victory. It wasn’t to be, most likely because of the high cost of production in the face of what are said to be low viewership numbers.
If Sense8 does ever get a second chance, it’s safe to say it won’t be on Netflix. That’s a rough deal, especially heading into Pride month — along with its fresh sci-fi angle (clusters of people who formed mental links with each other), the show stood out for its featuring of LQBTQ characters and themes.
