Planet of the Apps Finally Airs, and It’s Pretty Much Shark Tank for Apps

Planet of the Apps gives app developers a chance to make their apps a reality

On Tuesday night Apple Music debuted a new reality series that will shine a spotlight on up and coming app designers who want to create the next must have iOS app. The series Planet of the Apps will run for 10 weeks. According to CNET the show will follow the now standard reality show format.

Each designer has 60 seconds to pitch their app to a celebrity panel consisting of celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba, and will.i.am. The pitches will take place while the contestants are riding an escalator along the floor. So when the escalator stops and the 60 seconds are up the pitch is done.

The panel decides which apps deserve the chance to get made. The designers who are selected get the funding they need to make the apps and get them into the marketplace. They will also get some professional guidance along the way. The funding will be provided by Lightspeed Venture Partners, who also backed popular apps like Snapchat.

There are 100 app designers who are competing for the funding to make their apps a reality. At least a portion of those will be women which should boost representation of women working in the overwhelmingly male dominated app development niche. According to Phone Arena only 6% of mobile app developers are female.

Planet of the Apps airs on Apple Music on Tuesday nights although the episodes are also available for streaming on iTunes and PlanetoftheApps.com.
