Remember when summer used to be a break from TV? How times change. Game of Thrones is over on HBO giving summer a big dose of winter, and Netflix is out here with a handful of originals and other movies and shows to help keep you hooked to the screen year-round. Hey, look at it this way — at least now the screens can go outside with you! You know, it you’re into the whole outdoors thing. And you should be, so you can build up more reasons to be mad at your carrier. Here’s all the shows and movies we hope won’t get throttled for you, and as always, we’ve got the full list of what’s new on Netflix in August at the end.
Marvel’s The Defenders: Season 1 – August 18
Like with The Avengers, Marvel took their time setting up their TV crossover extravaganza. Starting with Daredevil in April 2015, Marvel has introduced New York City to a quartet of heroes — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist — that will be even more unwilling to team up than the movie guys. Spoiler alert: they will anyway.
Voltron: Legendary Defender: Season 3 – August 4
Yeah when you bring up Voltron, we’re going to be paying attention. This series is moving along at a brisk pace, with season two hitting Netflix back in January. Season four is already slated for October, so by all means, binge away when season three gets uploaded on August 4. It’ll be high drama — actual spoiler alert: Shiro is missing, so season three is probably going to deal a lot with how a team copes when its leader disappears. Whatever they do, it looks like the Black Lion won’t go unmanned for long.
Jackie Brown – August 1
If there’s an unheralded film in the Tarantino pantheon, this is it. Pam Grier is pretty boss in this game of crosses on crosses to secure a whole lot of smuggled cash and a clean getaway. Guaranteed good time if you like Tarantino, who’s kind of a genre unto himself.
