The UE Boom 2 came out about two years ago, and it’s cruised along as one of the better portable Bluetooth speakers on the market since then. That doesn’t mean Ultimate Ears has just been sitting back and enjoying the success — they’ve been gradually adding features to the speaker over time, including Siri and Google now functionality. This week, Ultimate Ears is building on that by adding support for Amazon’s Alexa.
The update won’t turn the UE Boom 2 into a better-sound Amazon Echo. While the Echo is always listening for voice commands, users will still need to press the Bluetooth button on the UE Boom 2 to issue commands to Alexa. Because it’ll require a Bluetooth connection to a phone and the Amazon app, that also means that the feature won’t work with every smartphone. Not only will it not work with iPhones, the app’s update log notes that Alexa will only work with the UE Boom 2 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany, and that it won’t work with the Huawei Mate 9, Pixel phones, or OnePlus phones.
But, if you have the right Android phone and you live in the right country, you should be good to go! The app update is available now, and once you download it you’ll be able to start bossing around your UE Boom 2 all you want.
