Too busy to keep up on all things geeky this week? We’ve got you covered with the trailers, merch, and news coming out of the week that was!
You know what our favorite Christmas present was! Opinions were divided over how good this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special was, but no one out there can kill our enthusiasm for those glorious few seconds when Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor went glowy and came out as Jodie Whittaker! Then, as is Christmas special regeneration tradition, she was promptly thrown from the Tardis and into the vacuum of space. Warms our hearts! Only one complaint — the new season won’t air until late next year.
Look, I wish I could say something positive about a tool that helps you build your own Marvel comics, but Marvel Create Your Own is some weak tea. In the upcoming creative platform, Marvel will provide stock characters (and poses) from their roster, along with a selection of backgrounds — you do the writing and the storyboarding. Sounds cool, but the terms? Not so much. You can read the long version here, but suffice it to say anything created is property of Marvel. You also have to abide by certain rules, which range from the reasonable (no obscenity, prescription drugs, or guns) to the absurd (no death, no sensationalized depictions of killer bees or aliens, no “noises related to bodily functions”). Absolutely no fart jokes, says Marvel. Oh, and incredibly, noted gun enthusiast Punisher is included in the promo shot. Good to see a lot of thought was put into this.
There are also some real eyebrow raisers, like the extremely vague “no politics, including “alternative lifestyle advocacies.”” And then, there are the eye rollers — no amusement parks other than Disney’s can be mentioned, no movie studios unaffiliated with Marvel can be mentioned, and you can’t make a parody of any Marvel advertising execs past or present.
Marvel wants you to supply them with sanitized, company-friendly comics for them for free. Create Your Own seems to be directed at kids, but that only makes its restraints on creativity and demands of fealty to The Company all the more off-putting. Fans of all ages can be more creative on their own.
Alright, let’s have a Marvel palate cleanser. The next movie due out in the MCU is Black Panther, and the hype train has been rolling. Last week saw the release of a new action-packed 30-second TV spot for the upcoming movie, which is for the most part a cut of the longer trailers we’ve seen. We also spotted an official jewelry collection made in partnership with Los Angeles-based designer Douriean Fletcher. Well, mostly jewelry. There’s a hat in there, too. The collection includes a claw bracelet, a claw necklace, and claw earrings. There’s also the super expensive $453 Ultimate Claw Necklace, so called because it has one big claw flanked by six little ones. Claws all around!
Filming for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald wrapped up on December 20 — this week, Warner Bros decided to share a little of what they’ve been working on. The studio shared two shots from the set — one of Jude Law as young Dumbledore with we don’t know who, while the other has a white-haired Johnny Depp as the young dark wizard Grindelwald alongside one of his followers, Vinda Rosier (played by Poppy Corby-Tuech).
