Better check the window for flying pigs, because it’s true — luxury performance automaker Ferrari just copped to planning an all-electric car for release in the near future. In fact, Ferrari was full of surprises at this week’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit! Bloomberg reports that not only did Ferrari reps confirm the development of an all-electric supercar, they said that a Ferrari SUV (it’ll be the fastest ever, they say) will be on the road in the next few years. Somewhere, someday, a bunch of kids will never, ever be late for soccer practice. That SUV could come as soon as 2019 or 2020, but it’s not clear when we should expect the all-electric Ferrari supercar.
It’s kind of a surprising turn! While the mass market is slowly but surely moving towards electric vehicles, there didn’t seem to be as much of an impetus for performance sports car makers to do the same. They only have a narrow set of well-to-do clientele to impress, and they’ve generally wanted the feel and power that only gas could provide. That’s why this quote from Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne is such an eye opener: “We do it because we have to do it.” So, what gives?
