Today, we’ve got a wonderful example of our favorite kind of speculation — conclusions drawn from job openings! They don’t say anything concrete, but hey, that company can’t be hiring for that position for no reason, right? Well, music and tech blog Music Ally has just spotted a set of Spotify job postings that is giving off way too much smoke to ignore.
Up until now, Spotify has only produced its streaming music service, plus the Spotify Connect standard that allows other speakers to easily connect directly to Spotify accounts. Seems like the company might not be satisfied with using other companies’ speakers, because in a series of new job postings, Spotify is looking to hire an operations manager, a senior product manager, and a project manager, all for hardware and engineering.
The money quote is the first line of the operations manager posting, which reads “Spotify is on its way to creating its first physical products and setting up an operational organisation for manufacturing, supply chain, sales & marketing.” The senior product manager posting also has a bit about “the creation of innovative Spotify experiences via connected hardware,” so it’s safe to say they’re planning to build some kind of device. Probably one that plays music!
The trick will be for Spotify to justify whatever it is they’re making. Other smart assistants like Alexa and the Google Assistant have enormous leads, were Spotify to plan on building their own. If the Spotify speaker were to use an existing smart assistant instead, they’d have to have a good reason for why you’d buy theirs instead of a Google Home or an Amazon Echo — something made even more difficult by how cheap Amazon’s speakers are. Whoever scores these jobs will have their work cut out for them!
