The Week in Geek – The Producers of Game of Thrones are Taking on Star Wars Next

Too busy to keep up on all things geeky this week? We’ve got you covered with the trailers, merch, and news coming out of the week that was!

The producers of Game of Thrones are now making a new series of Star Wars movies

The wars in the stars don’t stop. In the span of just a few months, we’ve learned that the future of Star Wars is not only more Star Wars (pretty sure we all knew that was going to be true), but more Star Wars at a faster clip. In November, we learned that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was given his own trilogy, which will exist outside the main episodic series. This week, Disney confirmed that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the showrunners of Game of Thrones, will write and produce their own series of Star Wars movies (not necessarily a trilogy). This will also exist outside the main episodic series, so you don’t have to worry about the whole slate of new characters getting killed off.

If it’s going to be an ongoing series, the hire makes sense. The six episodes of the final season of Game of Thrones are said to all be about the length of a feature film each, so that should provide some good experience. They’ll just be getting Disney budgets now, which, imagine if Game of Thrones had that! Dragons all the time. Anyway, assuming Disney presses on with the main series after Episode IX, that’ll make three series of Star Wars movies all being produced at the same time, which could mean a film release schedule similar to Marvel’s is in the works.
