A lot of people like to recap the best or the worst of something, but when it comes to video game movies, that’s no fun. Did you remember Dwayne Johnson was in a Doom movie? Maybe you did, but I forgot! Did you remember that a Hitman movie exists, at all? Did you forget Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li was a thing, and then did you also forget that movie went straight to DVD? Is it just that my memory sucks? Maybe! Or maybe those movies were boring bad — the worst kind of bad. So, in honor of yet another video game movie entering the canon with the new Tomb Raider coming out, let’s just remember the most memorable video game movies — the good and the bad! Also, there are no Pokémon movies on this list, because I feel like that’s its own thing that is altogether very memorable and good.
Super Mario Bros
In 1993, we saw one of the results of Nintendo letting others play with their toys (see also: The Zelda CD-i games). In the present day, Nintendo is working on an animated Mario movie that they are overseeing directly in cooperation with the folks that did Minions. It is not a stretch to say that the Super Mario Bros movie is a big reason for Nintendo’s change in strategy. The live-action movie turned Bowser into a guy and then a dinosaur, and also made Mario’s name Mario Mario. Bob Hoskins played Mario and regrets it tremendously, as revealed in an all-time great interview with The Guardian. Lesser known fact — Super Mario Bros was the first Hollywood-produced video game movie, a warning that went unheeded.
