After years of wondering when they were finally going to do it, Apple finally got into wireless charging with the iPhone X and iPhone 8. But, they stayed on the sidelines for so long for a good reason — as convenient as wireless charging is, it’s way, way slower than just plugging the phone in. Fortunately, that’s getting better, and the latest improvement is in the release of the Mophie Charge Stream Pad+.
When the iPhone X first came out, Mophie introduced a wireless charging pad that you might have seen in Apple Stores. Anyone who bought one found it to be pretty slow, so now months later, they’re finally addressing the problem. The Charge Stream Pad+ passes along 10 Watts of power, which will maximize wireless charging speeds.
Mophie isn’t making any changes to the design. It’s still got a rubberized surface, which is a really good thing — top phones like the iPhone X are all made out of glass now, and they tend to slide off smoother surfaces way too easily! It still uses the Qi wireless charging standard, too, which means it will work just as well with the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S9, and a number of other phones that feature wireless charging. One little change is that the charger itself now uses a Micro USB cable instead of a proprietary one — on the off chance you lose it, you’ll be able to replace it more easily.
Admittedly, it’s kind of a bummer if you already bought the model Mophie introduced at launch — you’re stuck with slower charging speeds, and this new charging pad is kind of expensive! The Mophie Charge Stream Pad+ is available now directly from Mophie for $60, but chances are you will be able to find it in Apple Stores soon enough. An all too familiar situation in the land of Apple accessories!
