Gel, Acrylic, Or Powder Dip? We’re Breaking Down Which Type Of Manicure Is Worth It

The manicure culture has seriously come a long way in the past few years. When I was growing up there were no options for what type of manicure you were getting. It was simply just a regular manicure.

Nowadays though, I would never pay for a regular manicure because it chips way too quickly. There are so many options, how can you know what to pick? We’re here to break down each type of manicure – to help you decide which one we think is worth it.

Acrylic Nails

For those of you who don’t know, acrylic nails are literally pieces of plastic being glued on top of your natural nail. Personally, it totally freaks me out and it just really isn’t my style but I’m not judging. Anyway, one of my good friends does acrylic and apparently it’s a very long manicure process.

We’re talking 90 minutes long. Another thing about acrylic nails is if they break it can take six months for your real nails to grow back. Not that other types of manicures don’t do this, but acrylic shreds your real nails.

The upkeep on this type or manicure is pretty serious. Also, you can’t just remove the nails yourself so you’ll be heading to the nail salon every 2-3 weeks. While your nails will look amazing, the cons seem to outweigh the pros.

Gel Extensions

I’m sure everyone knows what gel manicures are. I’m personally a huge fan of them. Sure, you pay a little more than you would for a regular manicure but you get to walk out with dry nails and they last for quite a while. Gel extensions though, are totally different.

The extensions are kind of similar to acrylics in the sense that you’re literally attaching something to your nail. The difference is that instead of glueing a fake nail to yours, you’re bonding the gel extension to your nail with an LED light.

With gel extensions you pick the nail you want and BOOM it’s bonded to yours in no time! The only problem with this nail trend is it’s really hard to find a salon that actually does it. However, if you call around I’m sure you can find one.

SNS Powder Dip

One of my best friends, Regan, swears my powder dip. It’s pretty much exactly what is sounds like. Instead of painting liquid on your nails, you dip nail in small containers and then they finish it off with a clear top coat – and you’re finished!

No UV lights, no placing your nails under the dryer, they’re just totally dry! It’s meant to last longer than regular gel, and it promotes nail growth.

The best part about the powder is apparently it has vitamins/nutrients that help keep your nails healthy!
