When our son was on the way, my wife and I needed a way to be able to print from two different computers (with the printer I already had) and be able to save and access the zillions of photos and hours and hours of HD video we’d inevitably take of our son. Since I’m the only provider of a family with a one-year-old, another on the way, and three pets, I had to find the cheapest solution I could without leaving our old, decrepit desktop computer on all the time (that thing sounds like a helicopter and my wife wouldn’t have it!) The solution that I found is halfway elegant, if not for its drawbacks. It’s a Belkin Network USB Hub. It works by plugging the thing in with an ethernet cord, plugging the USB devices into it, and then installing software on all of the computers on the network so they can “share” the devices. I put “share” in quotes because you can really only use a USB device on one computer at a time (it’s not true sharing.) The software controls which computer can access which device at any given time, and it has a neat “printer” feature that will connect, print, and disconnect when you use the printer.

Now for the drawbacks. First of all, I can’t use the software on one computer to disconnect a device from another so I can use it, so if I left a computer upstairs and want to use the hard drive connected to it, I have to go upstairs and disconnect it. That’s a small problem that I can deal with. The larger problem is the fact that the wonderful software provided with this Network USB Hub is Windows only!!! I’ve been wanting to put Ubuntu on that old decrepit desktop computer for a few years now, but now that 9.10 is out, I’m really itching to get it on there! If I do though, no printer, and no hard drive. I can’t access the Network USB Hub devices from a computer that doesn’t have Windows! Even worse, sometimes the software acts up, so my wife has to call me at work and I have to try to walk her through fixing it (which sometimes is a lost cause due to the fact that I generally have no idea why it failed to do its job.)

If I had an HP MediaSmart Server EX490, I would use it to store all of our photos, videos and music. I would also connect the printer to it so that I could share the photos, videos, music and the printer with all of the other devices on the network. I’d back up all of the data on our laptops, and furthermore, I’d use it to sync address books, contacts, internet favorites, etc. It’d really make our lives easier, since my wife loves to scrapbook and she prints photos regulary from our printer to use in the scrapbook (I wouldn’t have to try to fuddle through fixing it over the phone anymore!) Also, If we had a good way to catalog our videos, she’d certainly post plenty of them online for the extended family to see. As for me, I absolutely love music, and I have a huge library of it just copied over to several of the computers we have so that I can access it anywhere I want. It’s a real hassle making sure all of those libraries are individually updated. A MediaSmart Server would save us a whole lot of time! We’ve needed a solution like this for a while; it’s just way out of our price range, and pretty far down on the priority list. The hardest part about it is that I’m a real geek, and I love technology, and I can never afford any of it. I’m still walking the streets

This weekend in New York City, Chip Chick and a group of fellow tech bloggers took to the streets of New York City to spread some Windows 7 launch cheer. Well actually, we didn’t spend all that much time in the street, but we visited several Best Buys, Office Depot and Staples. Almost a month ago we reported on our exclusive trip to the iRobot headquarters and teased about the iNGENIOUS Challenge but never really said much about it. Tell Us Your Bad Mobile Manners Contest Winner

For our Tell us your bad mobile manners contest we received some very amusing, as well as some very rude stories of people practicing bad mobile etiquette. And way too many of these incidents happened to people while on a date. If there is one lesson that can be learned here – it’s don’t check your email or pick up the phone on a date folks! It’s just rude, and it’s likely you’ll never make it to a second date either.

So it was the first day of my Honors Intro History class during the spring semester of my freshman year. Obviously I had been through a whole semester of college, so I figured I had seen just about everything…or so I thought.

The class was a seminar/discussion-based course so there were only 9 people in the room including the teacher. She introduced herself and started to discuss the syllabus when a cell phone started to ring. To truly understand the hilarity of this situation, however, you need to understand who the cell phone belonged to. Meet Alice. Alice was a freshman, like me, but that is about where the similarities ended. Alice made a habit of chasing down the campus shuttle to get to class, throwing books at it until it stopped. Alice kept her cell phone in a fanny pack (which never left her person) with a 6 flags logo on the top. Alice had
“Who Let the Dog’s Out” as her ring tone.

Now I’ll admit, my cell phone went off at least twice during the previous semester so I understood that it could happen. And when it did, normal people would silence it quickly, turn bright red, and make profuse, quiet, humble apologies to everyone in the room. Alice was not a normal person. Alice rifled through her 6 flags fanny pack, got her cell phone, gave a cute smile to it, and answered.

The mood of the room was a mixture of confusion and amazement. The teacher quietly walked over to Alice and told her “Alice, you can’t take a phone call when we are in the middle of class…let alone while you are still in the cla” The sentence was cut off there by Alice’s finger, held up in front of her face while her lips mouthed “One minute” to a flabbergasted Ph.D.

Needless to say, Alice didn’t last very long in that class let alone the university’s Honors program. But she did take one more class with me (a psychology class, sans phone unfortunately) which was just as hilarious as the first (even without the phone). To this day, that story still gets everyone from my class cracking up. And I am so happy I got to witness it first hand!

I am entering the Skype worldwide contest for a few reasons. Reason number one being that this summer I will be traveling away from home and would love long distance for free. I use Skypeout now but only with a United States and Canada plan. A worldwide plan would be amazing. Also the hardware I use now are built in speakers and the built in mic. Whenever I’m typing while on Skype it sounds like I’m beating my laptop with a bat. Also, I have gotten dozens of people into Skype but my favorite thing is seeing my grandparents in Florida when I can’t visit them.
