We liked what we saw last year when Mophie released their Space Pack, an iPhone case that had both an external battery pack and external storage space. This year, Mophie is sharing the love with everyone by introducing the Mophie Spacestation, a combo battery pack and external hard drive that will work with just about any mobile device.
The good thing about going with a pack instead of a case is that everything can be bigger. While last year’s Space Pack cases were limited to 16 GB and 32 GB models with a 1,700 mAh battery, the Spacestation has 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB models with a 6,000 mAh battery. The battery is big enough to charge most mobile phones at least two or three times over—not that you’d necessarily need to do that, but if you have multiple mobile devices to keep charged, the large capacity is nice to have.
But, the Space Pack case isn’t going anywhere. It’s getting iPhone 6/6 Plus versions, along with a new model for the iPad Mini, all of which will be available in 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB capacities. The iPhone 6 Space Pack will have a 3,300 mAh battery that should charge your phone once over, while the iPhone 6 Plus version has an unfortunately smaller 2,600 mAh battery that should only give your iPhone 6 Plus half a full charge. The iPad Mini Space Pack has an 8,000 mAh battery that should give a full extra charge to the tablet.
Mophie is also releasing a new version of their Space app, designed to manage your files stored on the Spacestation or Space Pack. You’ll now be able to use the app to transfer files to other mobile devices (including Android devices, thanks to an Android version of the app) and the Mac and PC.
The Spacestation and the Space Pack for the iPhone 6/6 Plus can all be ordered now directly from Mophie, priced at $150 for the 32 GB models, $200 for the 64 GB models, and $300 for the 128 GB models. The iPad Mini Space Pack costs $200 for the 32 GB model, $300 for the 64 GB model and $400 for the 128 GB. The Space Packs will ship sometime in May, while the Spacestation is available now. They’re still pretty expensive, but given the iPhone’s battery woes and continued lack of a microSD card slot, those wanting an all-in-one accessory that solves both problems might still want to give the Space Pack and Spacestation a look.
