Satechi’s Type-C Hub is a Must-Have For 12″ MacBook Users

Ask and receive — one of our biggest complaints about the 12″ MacBook was its obstinate lack of ports besides a single USB Type-C port, requiring adapters to do pretty much anything requiring a peripheral or external storage. There weren’t many Type-C adapters at launch, but eventually, Satechi delivered with a Type-C Hub that included three USB 3.0 ports, an SD card slot, and a Micro SD card slot. The only problem we had there was that pass-through charging wasn’t possible, meaning we couldn’t charge the MacBook and use the hub at the same time. Looks like complaining worked again.

At CES 2016, Satechi announced a new, updated Type-C Hub with pass-through charging, meaning we can finally have it all — access to ports, laptop charging, and a useful MacBook. This hub is almost identical to the previous one, but it swaps out one of the three USB 3.0 ports for a pass-through USB Type-C port that can ferry power to the laptop. It’s a tiny change that makes a world of difference for anyone who got roped into the lightweight 12″ MacBook and has been in a love-hate relationship ever since.

We tested Satechi’s updated Type-C Hub on the 12″ MacBook and the new pass-through works like a charm. To that effect, if you own a 12″ MacBook, you absolutely can not pass up on buying this accessory. The updated Type-C Hub is available directly from Satechi for $45.
