Maleficent 2 is Confirmed and Angelina Jolie Will Be Back

We’ve heard plenty about the Marvel and Star Wars release schedules through 2019, but don’t think Disney hasn’t been paying just as much attention to their original toy box. With The Jungle Book in the books as a box office success, Disney is feeling good about mapping out their upcoming live action releases. While the slots don’t all have movies attached to them yet, at least you’ve got a handful of dates you can circle on the calendar — you do have calendars through 2019, right?

Here are the dates we’re looking at: live action Disney fairy tale on 7/28/17, live action Disney fairy tale on 4/6/18, live action Disney film on 8/3/18, live action Disney film on 12/25/18, and live action Disney fairy tale on 12/20/19. These dates are as much a way to figure out which other marquee films to compete with (or not compete with) as anything else. That goes for Disney’s own movies, too — the first movie on this list, now scheduled for July 28, 2017, was moved up from December 2017 to get some distance from the release of Star Wars: Episode VIII.

So, what movies are inside these question mark boxes? Deadline reports that at least one will be The Jungle Book 2, because upwards of $600 million in box office receipts demands it. That leaves four more slots for live action projects that are currently in the works at Disney’s studios. Among those movies is Cruella with Emma Stone, which I’m guessing will be a sort of The Devil Wears Prada look at the 101 Dalmatians villain. Another possibility is a Dumbo movie directed by Tim Burton, which should be strange on a number of levels. Other sequels in the works besides The Jungle Book 2 are Maleficent 2, which Angelina Jolie will return for, and a Mary Poppins sequel starring Emily Blunt. An adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic children’s novel A Wrinkle in Time (to be directed by Ava DuVernay) is also in development, along with Jungle Cruise (to star Dwayne Johnson), The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (a strong possibility for that Christmas 2018 slot), and a Tinker Bell movie starring Reese Witherspoon.

All of this is in addition to Alice Through the Looking Glass and Pete’s Dragon, both of which will be released this year, and the live action Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson set for March 17, 2017. We’re not sure when we’ll find out which movies will go with which future dates, but that information will reportedly be announced in the coming months.
