Gears of War is one of those video game series that doesn’t seem that old until you look it up and realize the original came out in 2006 and that the last main entry, Gears of War 3, came out five years ago. So, it’s been a while! But, the series is restarting this year after grinding to a halt. The debut trailer for Gears of War 4 dropped over the weekend, and unsurprisingly, it doesn’t look like sunshine and rainbows out there on Sera.
At the end of Gears of War 3, the Locust and Lambent threat was pretty much taken care of, with Marcus Fenix losing his father, Adam, in the process. Gears of War 4 looks to be the beginning of a new trilogy, hopping 25 years into the future, where we can see the hopeful end to Gears of War 3 didn’t go so well after all (when the trailer is set to a slowed-down version of “The Sound of Silence,” you know there’s going to be trouble).
You can see the twist for yourself in the trailer, but suffice it to say the new trilogy won’t go Halo on us — Marcus Fenix won’t be the main character again, although history repeating itself might be a theme in more ways than one. Gears of War 4 comes out on October 11 for Xbox One (and possibly Windows 10?), but those who purchased Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Xbox One or Windows 10 will get early access to the multiplayer beta in waves starting on April 18. On April 25, all Xbox Live Gold subscribers will be able to check the beta out until it ends on May 1, when the agonizing wait period between the end of the beta and the release date begins.
