During shooting for the recent revival miniseries of The X-Files, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny both made comments that amounted to “You know, I’m really too old for this, but I’m going to do it anyway.” That miniseries might have been so-so in the end, but it did show us that both Anderson and Duchovny are still capable of plenty on-screen action. Well, there’s a certain very action-oriented job opening on the market, and one fan seems to think Anderson would be well-suited for the role.

Anderson tweeted out a fan-made poster of her in the role as 007, presumably one not named James Bond. Anderson suggests Jane Bond, which might be a little bit too safe, but it works. Anyway, she’s a lot more likely to take the role of 007 for the next film than the incumbent, Daniel Craig. When you turn down £68 million (a shade under $100 million) to do a couple more movies, I’d say that’s closing the door pretty firmly. Apparently Craig’s current contract allows for a fifth movie, but signs point to him not doing that, either.
It’s hard to see Anderson’s reaction as anything more than a nod to the fans, although I’m sure she’d do fine in the role. As for who will actually take Craig’s place, some oddsmakers over in Europe stopped taking bets on Tom Hiddleston, known mostly for playing Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my time here on this planet, it’s that established, longstanding bookies always have the best information.
But, while we’re at it, let’s just jump over to oddsmakers Paddy Power to see who the other favorites are. Second on the list is Aidan Turner, an Irish actor who probably looks too much like Timothy Dalton to get the part. After that is Jamie Bell, who looks kinda boyish still, but maybe nothing a beard couldn’t fix. Tom Hardy is next, but we just had a brooding, hulking Bond, and we’re probably not going to get two in a row. Idris Elba has gotten a lot of action and attention from fans, and seems like he’d provide a good change of pace stylistically. After Elba, there are few intriguing choices, but then we get into range of Orlando Bloom and Henry Cavill, and things just start getting silly from there.
Gillian Anderson is actually starting to get some action, though, so hey, maybe the powers that be catch on to the buzz and run with this? Let’s get this done, so we can start speculating on who the next three or four Bond guys are going to be.
