You, like us, probably assumed this was true a while ago, but for what it’s worth, it’s now been (all but) confirmed. Benedict Cumberbatch will likely appear as Doctor Strange in Avengers: Infinity War, the 2018 ultimate ensemble superhero movie, per Empire magazine.
Cumberbatch told Empire during a set visit about the trials and tribulations of making so many actors’ and actresses’ schedules align, proving that agents and personal assistants are the real superheroes of the world. While it seems like he didn’t explicitly state he’d be in the movie, the names he dropped are all ones that will be in Infinity War, and like we said, it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion, anyway. It’ll be at least the second time Cumberbatch will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with his solo debut in Doctor Strange hitting theaters in a little over a month. But, considering Infinity War is slated for a 2018 release, we wouldn’t be surprised if he made another appearance between now and then.
The real question is how in the world this movie is going to work. Doctor Strange is part of the latest wave of Marvel Cinematic Universe superheroes, which also includes Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Spider-man. They’ll be in Infinity War, along with the Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man, plus all the originals from when this whole Avengers thing got started. Then add Thanos. Probably some other villains, too. How Infinity War is going to be any shorter than five hours is beyond me. Is Bruce Banner even going to have lines?
We don’t know how it will all shake out, but we get the feeling that the new characters being introduced will play heavier roles. After all, the MCU team needs a succession plan in place — Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, and all their original MCU friends aren’t going to play those roles forever, after all. When it comes to that, will Marvel recast those roles or lean more heavily on other, increasingly lesser-known characters? Infinity War should tell us a lot about what Marvel has planned.
