OtterBox uniVERSE Case Review (iPhone 7)

The OtterBox uniVERSE case can be used with a range of cool camera and charging accessories, but at the cost of adding a lot of bulk.

OtterBox is best known for building sturdy cases to protect your phone, but recently they introduced a modular case that can adapts to your individual needs, too. The OtterBox uniVERSE case has been designed to work with a variety of smartphone accessories like camera gadgets, wallets, and wireless charging adapters made by other companies.

Convenient! But, it’s an OtterBox case first and foremost, and that means it’s going to be rugged. OtterBox has their own drop test regimen that involves over 24 tests and over 238 hours of testing, most of which involves phones tumbling from great heights. So, the case is certainly capable of protecting your phone from damage and relieving you from worry.

To provide this level of protection, the OtterBox uniVERSE case is a bit thicker than most due to its multi-layer construction. Despite those extra layers, the volume and power buttons are responsive. The mute switch is a little tricky to reach, but still accessible with your fingertip. The bottom of the case is open, which makes it easy to install and remove. The camera opening is quite large and unobstructed, so it won’t affect your photos. The large camera window also ensures that this case can be used with an iPhone 6 or 6S.

Of course, the OtterBox uniVERSE case is all about the accessories. Other companies like Mophie have made special accessories just for the uniVERSE case, and they’re all really easy to use (and sold separately). To securely attach one, all that’s needed is to remove a plastic piece from the back of the case. It’s a rather clever system for attaching modules, but what do you do with this little piece of plastic while using the attachment? It seems like an item that could easily be lost.

Aside from that minor inconvenience, attaching the Mophie Charge Force battery charger is very easy. Simply align the rails and slide it in until it fits snugly. This mini wireless charging dongle will work with a range of wireless charging surfaces, including Mophie’s own Charge Force mounts.

The idea of removing the hassle of charging wires from our lives is appealing, but we found the adapter to be somewhat cumbersome. It was not comfortable to hold and it really detracts from the sleekness of the iPhone — after all, it’s an additional accessory on top of a large protective case!

Here’s another little aesthetic annoyance — the case comes in four colors (black, red, blue, and white), yet the attachments are primarily black. This may or may not matter to you, but it’s worth noting.
