On December 18 of 2018, Netflix released their biggest hit to date – Bird Box, the survival horror movie starring Sandra Bullock. In the first few days of the film’s release, it was streamed over 45 million times!
If you haven’t seen the movie yet, the premise is as follows according to Netflix: “a mother must find the strength to flee with her children down a treacherous river in search of safety…due to unseen deadly forces, the perilous journey must be made blindly.”
The movie isn’t about just about a mother finding safety for her children. Sandra Bullock explained it to People as a “deep, emotional love story about what is family, what’s happening in the world, what’s making people harm themselves that’s so hard to look at.”
All throughout the film, Sandra and her two children must remain blindfolded in order to survive. What many people don’t realize is Sandra was actually blindfolded for the entire film. In order to better prepare herself for the role, she consulted with someone who teaches recently blind people how to navigate the world.
The hard work that went into the film did not go unnoticed by critics. Bird Box earned a 66 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised the film’s “strong acting and chilly mood.”
However, the film didn’t score higher because some felt the film didn’t truly reach its’ full potential. Basically what this means is the film and storyline could have developed more.
After watching the film, I tend to agree with the latter opinion. There were parts of the film that were really, really great and well done.
That being said, they could have explained more about what the mysterious killing was all about. Overall though, the movie was great and I definitely recommend watching it. Plus, how else are you going to be able to understand all of the memes about it?!
