27-year-old Kelly Owen was a young mom living on Long Island in South Farmingdale.
She lived with her parents, her brother, and her daughter.
Kelly was working hard on getting her degree in nursing while taking care of her 6-year-old daughter.
She had been married to 27-year-old Michael Owen for 5 years, but the couple had recently gone their separate ways.
Despite Kelly and Michael splitting up in 2018, the two continued to have a relationship that was “physical and intimate,” according to Nassau County Homicide Detective Lieutenant Stephen Fitzpatrick.
Even though Michael and Kelly were continuing a pretty intimate relationship, Michael had a new girlfriend that he was living with.

On January 15th, Kelly’s family knew something was wrong when she failed to show up to her daughter’s afterschool program that started at 3 pm. That just was not like her.
When Kelly’s mom and dad came home at 3:30, they saw Kelly’s car in the driveway. They hurried inside their home to find Kelly lying lifelessly in her bed.
She was not breathing, so they immediately called 911.
10 minutes after the call was made, Kelly was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities are now saying that Michael murdered Kelly after she told him she was pregnant.
The coroner has ruled Kelly’s death was caused by asphyxiation, and they also confirmed that Kelly was definitely pregnant.
“He did not want this child,” Nassau County Homicide Detective Lieutenant Stephen Fitzpatrick said about what Michael did to Kelly at a local news conference.
“He did not want to give her medical insurance. He had this new relationship he was involved in, and he was in a bad position.”
“Everybody in that neighborhood came forward, whether they had video or they saw something. A lot of information was significant for our case.”

As of right now, Michael has pleaded not guilty to Kelly’s murder and he has been remanded into custody without bail.
A judge has also ordered Michael to have no contact with his 6-year-old daughter at all.
