I worked in fashion for nearly my whole career, and I’ll be the first one to admit to you it’s a really non-inclusive industry.
Over the past few years, there definitely has been some improvement to include women who don’t have legs three miles long and cheekbones that can cut glass, but we still have a long way to go.
When you think of New York Fashion Week, that’s one fashion-focused platform that doesn’t quite include women of all shapes and sizes…but strides are certainly being made there to be more inclusive as well.
Sofía Jirau is just 22-years-old, and she became the second model with Down syndrome to walk the runway at New York Fashion Week (the very first one was Madeline Stuart, who walked in 2018).

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that results in someone having an additional chromosome.
It can cause a lot of physical and developmental disabilities, but it hasn’t impacted Sofía’s ability to go after her dreams one bit.

As Sofía says on her Instagram, “Inside and out there are no limits. You can accomplish your dreams too!”
Sofía totally earns the title of Chicks We Love this week for breaking boundaries and inspiring people to realize beauty really does come in all kinds of packages.
When Sofía was just 5-years-old, she wanted to grow up to be a businesswoman and a model.
She has certainly achieved everything she dreamed of as a child, because not only is she a model…she also owns her own company!
Her company is called Alavett (the name is inspired by “I love it.”), and it’s a line of clothing.
Aside from working hard as an entrepreneur, Sofía’s new goal is to be able to take her modeling work to Europe.
Sofía really proves you can do anything you set your mind to! You can follow her and her amazing adventures on Instagram here.
