“I know I probably have an eating disorder but I feel like it’s the only way I can protect myself. This issue was fully caused by seeing my mom at such an enormous weight, along with comments she’d make: she was always snarking at me about my food unless I ate garbage like her.”
Her mom always warned her that once she would hit her 20s, she would not be able to eat anything or she would end up overweight just like her.
She also knows that her mom will be thrilled if she does get to be just like her.
She’s terrified to gain weight now that she’s getting older. She did try therapy to get past everything, but she didn’t find it to be helpful so she stopped going.
She did tell her boyfriend about the problems she went through with her mom, though she skipped over all of the details.
“He knows why I’m scared of eating too much,” she continued. “We’ve been together for 2 years. The last few months, he’s been more and more pushy about wanting me to eat.”
“He says I am too skinny and look unwell. He says I need to gain weight or my health will be in danger.”
“I would appreciate his worry, but yesterday he told me he would not consider marrying me until I had gained weight. Above the amount I’d be comfortable with. So I’m not getting engaged until I fix this.”
She’s concerned that what her boyfriend wants her to do won’t be doable for her, and he might then think she’s not serious about being with him.
