While the man and his cousin greeted each other, he overheard the bride asking, “did they not get the memo on the dress code?”
The man responded yes and referenced the semi-formal to formal instructions listed on the invitation. So, you can imagine how confused the man was when the bride looked his girlfriend up and down and scoffed.
“I asked if there was a problem, and she told me no, so we went to sit down,” the man said. All eyes were still on the couple, though, and his girlfriend felt understandably very uncomfortable.
She felt so awkward that she asked the man to borrow his jacket to cover up her legs. While passing the coat, though, the man noticed the bride and her mother whispering and pointing in their direction.
“The mom came over and asked if we got the memo for the dress code. I was already pretty angry, so I got up and asked what the problem was,” he explained. The bride’s mother made a remark about the dress being “too revealing for this event,” and that was when the man lost it.
“Well, that’s too damn bad. If you guys are so offended by it, next time, but what you want people to wear on the damn invitation,” he said to the mother.
The man’s girlfriend felt even more uncomfortable and told the man it was time to leave. He agreed, and they exited the venue together before the wedding even began.
Now, the man’s whole family feels that he was being rude and that it was his responsibility to inquire about the dress code.
“I feel I shouldn’t have to ask,” the man explained, “And, people making my girlfriend feel bad about wearing something she felt comfortable in is not going to fly by me.”
How would you have responded if you were in this man’s shoes? Is it the guests’ responsibility to ask for a dress code? And, do you think he overreacted or did the right thing by defending his girlfriend?
