The woman told her that she approached the situation in a totally inappropriate manner and that she basically should not be calling other people that.
Instead, she should have called them plus-size.
After realizing how much she had upset them, she was mortified and quickly left the interaction sobbing.
And now, she is really unclear about the societal norms surrounding the words “plus-size” versus “fat.”
“I usually don’t refer to people like that, but instead call myself fat in a positive way and just use the term plus-size. But I would never intentionally use that word to upset or hurt someone,” she reasoned.
Nonetheless, she has been left wondering if calling a complete stranger “fat” was a really rude thing to do despite movements to change the connotation of the word.
Do you think the de-stigmatization of the term “fat” is widespread enough for it not to be taken offensively? Should people just refrain from commenting on others’ body types in the first place?
