This Mom Went Viral On TikTok For The Active Shooter Drill That She Practices With Her 5-Year-Old Son Before Sending Him Back To School This Year

The horrific tragedies that occurred due to the recent elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, have rattled parents all across the country.

With back-to-school season upon us, families are coming up with different techniques to prepare their children in case a shooter enters their classroom.

Cassie Walton, a 23-year-old mother living in Oklahoma, created a viral video on TikTok recording herself instructing her 5-year-old son, Weston, on what to do if there was ever a shooting at his school.

Along with the other supplies Weston would need for the school year, Cassie also purchased him a bulletproof Spiderman backpack.

While Weston looks excited to have such a cool-looking backpack in the TikTok video, Cassie reminds him of its purpose while walking him through a shooter drill.

Cassie asks Weston what he is going to do if a teacher goes onto his school intercom and announces that there is a shooter and it is not a drill.

Weston then takes his backpack and sits tightly in a corner.

“Now show me how you use your bulletproof backpack,” Cassie says in the video. Weston then takes the backpack and shields his face and body with it as he sits in a criss-cross position.

Cassie then asks Weston what he would do if his teacher told him that he doesn’t need his backpack.

“I would say, ‘No, I need it. It’s bulletproof,'” responds Weston.

Later in the video, Cassie asks Weston what he would do if the shooter and the police are in the building at the same time, and someone asks if there was anyone in the classroom.

Weston eagerly responds, “I’ll say, ‘I’m here!'”

“Absolutely not,” says Cassie. “You don’t say a word. If the shooter is in there, you do not say a word.”

Cassie also instructs Weston to run “as far away from the school” as he can once he is out of the building.

“Mom will find you,” says Cassie. The video gained lots of attention from news outlets and families all around the world.

In an interview with TODAY Parents, Cassie said that the aftermath of the Uvalde shooting made her realize how important it is that her son is prepared.

“I wanted him to be prepared and have somewhat of an idea of what to do if the situation should ever arise,” Cassie told TODAY Parents.

“He could see what was going on in Texas and, as kids do, he had questions, so I answered his questions [as best as] I could.”

Despite having to prepare for such a terrifying situation, Weston is still a sweet and happy little boy. Cassie posted another video where she tells him all about how news stations are writing about him.

“I’ve always wanted to be famous,” says a cheerful Weston.
