So, the idea of being doomed to a preconceived fate is terrifying for the teen. He now worries about eventually getting married or having children because he knows that Brooke will always need additional care.
Moreover, he has been wrestling with the fact that even though he loves his sister, he does not want to be the one in charge of her fate.
Still, he never openly expressed these feelings to his parents until recently, when he began to lash out at them more.
And in response to his uncharacteristic behavior, his parents took him to a therapist– which is when the truth finally came out.
“I told them I hate them for having me. I told them they gave me a burden to carry my whole life before mom had even given birth to me,” he said.
And even though the outburst was wholly understandable, his parents were appalled. They claimed that he was being selfish and believed that not wanting to care for his sister was cruel.
So now, while he knows that his feelings are valid, he is not sure if lashing out at his parents was the wrong thing to do.
Do you think the teen’s reaction was fair? If you were in his shoes, how would you navigate this situation?
