This program is doing important work, as there are fewer than 205 red pandas in their program. The World Wildlife Fund website states that red pandas are extinct due to habitat loss, deforestation, and poaching.
“We’re fortunate to have another successful red panda birth. Having two successful litters back-to-back is a testament to the hard work, planning, and teamwork at the zoo,” said Animal Care Supervisor Pat Fountain in an interview with Heath Thurman.
“Introducing another red panda cub to the SSP is crucial for the species moving forward; we’re glad to be a part of the solution.”
Although we’re very eager to see more of the little club, it still has a lot of growing to do!
According to the blog post, it takes a red panda cub two weeks to open its eyes and about two months before they begin to leave their nest. The little cub is small enough to fit in someone’s palm. Too cute!
