And ever since then, he has been badgering her to cover the surgery cost– because apparently, he never “handled” getting his own health insurance at all.
“Of course, he could not send one email to HR to enroll in his workplace’s health insurance. Plus, he says this is my fault for not reminding him enough that he is not on my insurance anymore,” she said.
So now, even though she wants to help her son, she literally cannot. She has no idea what the surgery will end up costing and, on top of that, is still financially recovering from her dog’s ACL surgery last year.
“Plus, the hubs and I would like to retire in a few years, and I’m not sure we can do that if we take on who knows how much medical debt,” she explained.
Her son and the rest of her family do not agree, though. Instead, they have been blowing up her phone and calling her a complete jerk for covering her dog’s ACL procedure and not her own son’s.
In turn, this mom has been left stuck between a rock and a hard place. She is not sure if declining to pay her son’s medical bill is the wake-up call he needed or if she is genuinely in the wrong.
Do you think this mom still has an obligation to pay her son’s bills even though he is twenty-six? What would you do in her situation?
