Very little is known for sure about St. Nicholas’ true life. Of course, though, there are plenty of tales.
He is credited with resurrecting three murdered children, chopping down a demon-possessed tree, and constantly giving away his inherited wealth via anonymous donations to the poor.
This is what ultimately led St. Nick to gain his reputation as Santa Claus– a figure who is now arguably one of the most widely known and beloved figures in popular media.
And now, as research continues to be conducted on the site, Christmas lovers, both young and old, may be able to finally learn more about the true man behind the myths.
“I think many people– from eager kiddos on Christmas Eve to world-weary science reporters and grizzled archaeologists– have at some point in their lives hoped to get a little glimpse of the real St. Nick,” said William Caraher, a University of North Dakota archaeologist.
