The cohort study revealed that from 2016 to 2021, the frequency of ransomware attacks also increasingly impacted larger organizations that span multiple facilities. This ultimately exposed more patients’ personal health information and was more strongly associated with cancelations or delays in care.
So, with these attacks on the rise– threatening both patient privacy and care– the study’s authors issued a plea to policymakers.
“As policymakers craft legislation aimed at countering the threat of ransomware attacks across multiple industries, we urge them to focus on the specific needs of healthcare delivery organizations, for which operational disruptions may carry substantial implications for the quality and safety of patient care.”
