Do not allow your dog to cross sides freely. Your canine should be consistently walking on the same side throughout your stroll.
Use the hand on the same side as your dog to help guide them back to the original side they were on, and refrain from yanking the leash to get your dog to do your bidding.
“Once I have that attention, I can now release them to sniff on the side they were interested in,” explained Alex.
Lastly, we have the 5-10 Mississippi Rule, which dictates how long you should stop at the spot that your dog wants to sniff.
Count up to five or ten Mississippis before moving on. Alex breaks his dog’s attention with a bit of recall and then continues the momentum of the walk.
