Then, this pushed the night to end on a pretty sour note– because he and his wife wound up just repeating the same sentiment up until everyone went to bed.
Plus, by the following morning, things were still pretty tense. His wife also decided to have a long discussion with their daughter about pushing sound out and not shrinking away from the audience.
On top of that, his wife had their daughter stand outside on their room’s balcony to sing a song. During the song, his daughter was instructed to face toward the ocean, and he thought this was a good pep talk and lesson for Allison to learn to embrace her voice.
Now, it’s important to note that he claims he and his wife are not “stage parents.”
“Our children tell us their interests, and we support them in pursuing them. This is not some effort to exploit our kid or make her a star,” he explained.
In spite of that, he and his wife didn’t stop after the karaoke incident. Instead, they realized a day later that the cruise also happened to have a talent show. So, he and his wife again asked if Alison would try to perform for a second time. But, that time, they wanted her to sign an opera song, “Caro Mio Ben,” which she had also been studying.
And according to him, his daughter did end up saying yes to giving it another go. However, in the wake of everything that happened with the karaoke night, he has now started wondering whether forcing his daughter to sing at the talent show makes him a jerk.
Can you understand why his 13-year-old daughter might have felt uncomfortable or nervous while performing at the karaoke night? Why do you think he and his wife took it so seriously? Does it sound like he and his wife really are “stage parents?” If you were in his shoes, what would you change?
