The difference between May and Luke is that Luke might not attend another graduation ceremony as he’s not planning on attending college. On the other hand, May is going to graduate school, so she’ll eventually have another ceremony.
She figured flying to her daughter’s graduation would come with the risk of bad weather and layovers that could ruin her chances of seeing Luke graduate. Therefore, she decided to tell May she wouldn’t make it to her ceremony.
“I’ve told her that I’ll attend her next graduation, but this time I’m just going to attend her brother’s since graduating high school is such a big step,” she explained. “May seemed a little upset at first, but she told me it was fine and that she understood.”
Later, she got a phone call from May’s father, who said she was quite hurt to hear her mom wouldn’t be at her college graduation, especially because her high school graduation was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He told her it was certainly possible for her to fly back and forth and attend both graduations, but she didn’t think it was practical.
She decided to anonymously write a post about their situation online. May eventually found it and came forward with her feelings of disappointment towards her. It was enough to get her to change her mind.
“I did reach out to her to apologize for not being considerate of how this was going to make her feel,” she said. “I’m going to fly out earlier to spend more time with her and to attend her graduation ceremony.”
Should she have tried to arrange plans to make it to both graduations from the start before causing all this drama?
