Then, while he was making a drink in the kitchen, one of his drunk “friends” even walked in and said, “We’re all talking about how you’re such a lightweight,” before bursting into laughter and walking out.
So, the longer he hung out with everyone, the clearer everything became. Any time he arranged an event, his “friends” would show up late and head out early. He wasn’t invited to any get-together that he didn’t plan either. Plus, it just so happened that he was always left out of everyone’s inside jokes.
“People didn’t laugh with me. They just laughed at me. And I figured that’s how it had always been, but I’d been oblivious to it,” he said.
No one ever asked him how he was doing or what was going on in his life. In fact, he got a new job months ago, and none of his friends even seemed to notice.
And yet again, during his own birthday celebration, half of his guests left early. Afterward, the rest of the attendees just sat there looking bored and scrolling on their phones until they left, too. To make matters even worse, he also saw a since-deleted Facebook post from the night of his party. It was from this post that he learned all of his friends went out together after his party, yet he wasn’t even invited!
“I just want to cry, but I can’t. I’ve never experienced this before and don’t know what to do,” he vented.
One thing he is certain of, however, is that he definitely needs some new friends.
Have you ever been alienated and ostracized by your friend group? Can you imagine how he must have felt hearing all of those terrible things said about him at his own birthday party? How would you have reacted? What advice would you give him moving forward?
