This 47-year-old woman recently decided to try online dating. So, she set her preference for guys’ ages to be between 40 and 55 years old before she started swiping away.

Eventually, she stumbled upon a man who claimed he was 55. And apparently, he was fit and appeared to be pretty wealthy.

She and the man got to texting, too, and through their conversations, she realized he was pretty fun and light-hearted.

Then, she checked out his LinkedIn page as a sort of background check and found that everything looked legit. Plus, she learned the man even worked in banking.

That’s why, after he invited her out to a fancy restaurant one night, she agreed to be his date.

But, when she eventually arrived for her date, she saw an old man staring and smiling back at her.

At that point, it was clear the guy was actually at least 70 years old. However, she recalled how his smile was disarming– pushing her to stay for dinner instead of just getting up, calling him a liar, and leaving.

“Also, I was kind of trapped behind a table and waiters,” she added.

Anyway, they wound up sitting down, and she tried to mentally plan out how she was going to delicately handle the situation. After all, the guy truly gave her “old man vibes,” and she believes it is important to be polite to the elderly.

But then, after the man started talking about himself, she started to get a bit intrigued.

First, he discussed how he had started out as an archaeologist. And while they sat at the restaurant– which was right by the sea– he started telling her all about the rocks that were around them.

And honestly, this was not the most riveting topic for her. So, she was still searching for the right moment to give her whole spiel about how it was nice meeting him, but she was looking to be in a relationship with someone closer to her age.

However, the man then went on to tell her all about his properties and hobbies. She learned that he owned a home in Lyon, France, and collected horses. Plus, she found out that the guy even ate lunch and dinner with Prince Charles on numerous occasions.

“And, you know, it all rang true,” she said.

Later, the man asked to learn more about her, too. So, she talked about her experiences traveling, how she spoke four languages and currently teaches at a university.

Her goal here, though, was to show the man that she worked and could hold her own. She wanted to make it known that she was not a “sugar lady type.”

But, by the time their dinner ended, she was sober; meanwhile, the man was drunk and just kept droning on about how beautiful and interesting she was.

So, she took that as her cue to admit that she was looking for a man her own age. However, the guy did not understand and just started arguing with her– claiming he knew just how to make a woman happy.

At that point, she decided to just ask the guy why he didn’t date women around his own age then. And apparently, he responded, “Because I can afford younger ones.”

After hearing that, she tried to take a deep breath and avoid getting angry or taking anything personally. Then, she looked him dead in the eyes and told him, “You may buy women, but you can’t fix your sagging [body].”

Following that mic drop moment, she just smiled at him, stood up, and walked out of the restaurant as fast as she could. Thankfully, there was even a taxi right outside the restaurant, which promptly whisked her away from that situation.

Still, ever since the date night went wrong, she’s been feeling torn about what she did.

Following the dinner, she decided to block the guy online immediately. That way, she would be able to have the last word.

However, she’s not sure if she handled the situation in the best way possible. On the one hand, she knows the guy is a liar. But, on the other hand, she realizes that her comment was really ageist and that she made a mistake by not leaving sooner.

“I even thought of apologizing to him for the final comment while emphasizing he’s a liar,” she vented.

Nonetheless, she’s been left wondering what else she could have done at that moment and whether or not she should reach out to apologize.

Do you think she should have been more polite just because the man is elderly? Or did he get what he deserved because he lied? Do you believe she needs to apologize or not? How would you have reacted in this situation?
