Well, Memorial Day pretty much marks the start of summer, and Labor Day sadly signifies the end.  Since 1894, Labor Day has been an official holiday here in America, but why?

We celebrate Labor Day with a remembrance of the American labor movement. The very first observed Labor Day happened back on September 5th, 1882.

10,000 workers marched through New York City after taking unpaid leave in an effort to show the strength of their organizations. Union leaders put together the march, and it wasn’t just that: there were fireworks and picnics, too.

Labor Day quickly caught on as a tradition in New York City, and other areas in America adopted it as well.

The rest is history, as they say! Anyway, I’m sure you’re going to a bunch of cookouts this weekend to celebrate Labor Day, but if you’re anything like me, you’re panicking about what to bring with you.

Don’t worry, I have you covered, and I already did some homework for us on 3 recipes we can whip up so we don’t show up to our parties empty-handed.

Mamaw Gail’s Famous Game Day Hot Dog Chili

Is there anything more American than hot dogs? I’ll wait while you think about that, and in the meantime, allow me to introduce you to Mamaw Gail, who should be deemed a national treasure. She’s adorable, and her recipes are seriously amazing.

One of my favorite things she makes is what she calls her famous game day hot dog chili, and this is Mamaw-approved to be a crowd-pleaser.

Kris Jenner’s Famous Layered Dip

Where are my Kardashian fans? Kris Jenner has spilled the beans on her famous layered dip, and here’s how you can recreate it. (I bet this will also be an excellent conversation starter at a cookout.)

Ingredients:

  • 8 avocados, peeled and with the pits removed
  • One 8-ounce jar of smooth salsa, not chunky
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon of onion powder
  • ½ of a lemon wedge
  • 1 1/2 cups of sour cream (stir it to make it super smooth)
  • 1 1/2 cups of grated, sharp cheddar cheese
  • One 3.8-ounce can of sliced black olives (make sure to drain them, then dry them off)
  • 4 plum tomatoes (remove the seeds, dice them up, dry off with paper towels)
  • 8 scallions, white and green ends, finely chopped
  • Tortilla chips
  • Salt
  • Ground black pepper

Instructions:

1. Grab a big bowl, take a potato masher, and mash up your avocados. Next, stir in your garlic salt, onion powder, and salsa. Add in a generous amount of pepper and salt.

2. Take a spatula and use that to make your guac level. Then squeeze your lemon slice over it.

3. Your next step is to evenly spread the sour cream as the second layer, then top with the cheese.

4. Place the olives around the edge of the dish and layer in tomatoes and scallions so it looks like a bull’s eye pattern.

You can put plastic wrap to cover it up and place it in the fridge for four hours. Enjoy with tortilla chips!

Bacon Cheeseburger Dip

I never in a million years would have thought to make cheeseburgers into a dip, but thankfully, this amazing woman did!

Ingredients:

  • One pound of ground beef
  • 8 pieces of cooked, crispy bacon, diced up
  • 12 pieces of American cheese
  • 3 cups of shredded Colby Jack cheese
  • 1/2 a block of 4-ounce cream cheese
  • One 14.5-ounce can of diced tomatoes (drain them out)
  • 1/2 of a red onion, diced up
  • 1/2 a cup of sour cream
  • 5 dill pickle spears diced up

Special Sauce Ingredients:

  • 3/4 a cup of mayonnaise
  • 3 Tablespoons of relish
  • 1 Tablespoon of yellow onion, grated
  • 1 Tablespoon of yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon of white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1/2 of a teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/4 of a teaspoon of fine sea salt

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 250 and cook your ground beef until it’s a touch pink, adding whatever burger seasoning you prefer.

2. Make the sauce with all of the special sauce ingredients listed above mixed into a bowl.

3. Grab a casserole dish and put the beef down first, then top with American cheese, Colby Jack cheese, diced tomatoes, cream cheese, and half of the red onion. Place this in the oven and good for an hour and a half, but check it halfway through the cooking time to make sure you don’t overcook.

4. Pull it out of the oven, add the sour cream, and mix it up. Add the bacon and some shredded cheese to top it off, then put it back in the oven for another 15 minutes or so.

5. When you’re finished cooking, put the diced-up pickles and red onion on top and serve it with your favorite chips!
