These Parents Discovered A Hacker Was Speaking To Their Son Through A Security Camera

Security cameras are a super popular device to have in your home, but, how “safe” are cameras in reality?

An alarming number of camera users have come forward after experiencing frightening tampering with their security devices.

One particular pair of parents who actually used their security camera as a baby monitor was horrified to learn that a man had hacked their device and spoke to their child.

The mother, Franchelle, posted video footage of her and her husband’s unsettling realization on TikTok.

During bedtime one night, their son expressed his fears about the camera in his room and asked for it to be removed.

“Oh no! Look at this!” Franchelle’s son called after his father.

“Up there, up there, daddy,” he said, pointing toward the camera.

Franchelle’s husband asked why his son did not want the camera in his room anymore. “Because it is talking,” the couple’s son said.

Franchelle was immediately alerted by her husband and brought into the room.

“Babe, Junior is saying that the camera talks to him at night,” her husband said.

Franchelle then asked her son what the camera would say. Their son told them that the voice coming from the camera is a male who says he “wants ice cream.”

The type of camera that Fanchelle has functions on wifi which is what makes hacking possible.

Franchelle’s TikTok reached over 11.3 million people, gained 1.2 million likes, and spurred thousands of comments. Many users commended Franchelle and her husband for believing their son.

“Well done to you both for listening and validating him! It is so important,” one user commented.

“I am proud of that kid for speaking up. You are great parents for listening, too,” added a second user.

Many TikTokers also shared their own experiences with hackers.

“Our [daughter] used to point at the camera and say ‘noise.’ We caught someone talking to her one night,” said one user.

“This does happen! It happened to me once while leaving for work. Someone came onto my ring and said, ‘have a good day, beautiful!'” a second user commented.

Until Ring can address these hacking concerns, it appears that ditching the cameras for internal use is a safe bet. Many TikTok parents suggest using non-wifi-dependent baby monitors instead.
