A Mom Tragically Died In Her Sleep While Flying To The U.K. With Her Husband And Two Children

On August 5, Helen Rhodes– a forty-six-year-old wife and mother of two– tragically passed away in her sleep on a flight from Hong Kong to the U.K.
Helen had lived in Hong Kong for fifteen years, and that Friday, she and her family were embarking on a new chapter back in the U.K.
“Helen was excited and nervous about the move but looked forward to seeing her family back home in the U.K.,” detailed a GoFundMe campaign that has since been created in Helen’s honor.
“She had not seen her family or aging parents since the pandemic began, but, sadly, she never got to see them again.”
Instead, Helen was found unresponsive after falling asleep in her airplane seat, and relentless attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.
She had been traveling with her husband, Simon, and their two children, Nathan and Emma.
“This all unfolded in front of her children. For the remaining eight hours of the flight, Helen laid in a breathless sleep in her seat,” the GoFundMe campaign continued.
Following a landing in Germany, Helen was also forced to remain in Frankfurt while Simon and the children finished their travels to the U.K.

The utterly unexpected and heart-wrenching incident has been devastating for the Rhodes family. Nonetheless, they are grateful for the daughter, wife, mom, and friend who has touched countless people’s lives.
Now, Jayne Jeje– a friend of Helen’s– has organized the GoFundMe campaign in an attempt to help the Rhodes family cope, grieve, and honor Helen.
“We can only hope she knew how much she meant to us and how her void can never be filled, how this loss is so painful and surreal. The grief we feel is paralyzing. Yet, we feel lucky to have known her,” wrote Jayne.
All funds raised will go toward three key areas: first, any unexpected funeral expenses; second, Simon’s children while he takes time off to grieve the loss of his wife; and third, to create a legacy in Helen’s honor.
The campaign, which was launched just five days ago with a goal of twenty thousand pounds, has already raised nearly thirty-five thousand pounds from nine hundred and eighty-four donors.
“I saw Helen nearly every morning with her two lovely kids; really heart-breaking. Helen was the most caring, generous, and thoughtful person. Thank you for all the great memories and deepest condolences to Simon and the kids,” wrote donor Tim Chow.
“Sending love and prayers to all family and friends who loved Helen. She will forever be in our hearts,” wrote another donor Melanie Ohara.
