She was eventually named vice president but still wasn’t taken very seriously.
That is until she became the founding president and CEO of the Women’s Bank of Denver in 1977, a bank dedicated to serving women’s banking and financial needs.
It was a very important establishment, as during that time, women weren’t even allowed to apply for a loan without their husbands’ signatures.
LaRae became a member of a powerful group of women who called themselves “The Velvet Hammer.” Their mission was to personally contact male CEOs of different companies and ask why no women were on their boards of directors.
Then, they’d provide them with the resumes of highly qualified women.
In 1983, she was named one of Savvy Magazine’s top 20 corporate women. After two years with the Women’s Bank of Denver, LaRae returned to Guaranty Bank, where she was named vice chairman on their board of directors in 1997.
Since then, LaRae has made quite the name for herself and has sat on the boards of several companies. She also is well-known for serving as National President and Chair of the Girl Scouts of the USA.
Although she retired from officially working in banks, LaRae is still helping and encouraging women by giving helpful seminars to women in banking. She is 89-years-old. Talk about a woman who broke a glass ceiling!
