In fact, she and James’ friends started asking why they made that decision. But, she refused to provide a reason and just underscored how there would be no alcohol.
Then, the friends also asked if she was pregnant. And she was forced to reiterate that she simply did not want alcohol at her wedding.
Anyway, this pushed the group to accuse her of being a “buzzkill.” She also got told that since people attend weddings to drink, it would only be polite for her and James to “put money behind the bar,” especially since they were having evening guests.
The conversation then turned into a big debate about alcohol at weddings until one of her more close friends joined the conversation and asked why she did not just come clean about the real reason why she doesn’t drink.
At that point, she kind of snapped at her friend and just said it was nobody’s business. And she realizes that was pretty rude, but she was getting pretty frustrated at the time.
Still, one of her fiancé’s friends claimed that being honest was the least she could do. They also claimed it would be really wrong if she did not try to explain her reasoning.
“And one of them made a fairly unpleasant joke at my expense, basically suggesting that I am the ‘ball and chain’ now for James,” she vented.
After that, she wound up just removing herself from the conversation because she was genuinely upset. Plus, she really did not think she owed anyone an explanation for her wedding choices.
Nonetheless, ever since everyone freaked out at her fiancé’s birthday party, she’s been left wondering whether not allowing alcohol at her wedding– and not telling any guests the reason why– makes her a jerk or not.
Were her friends right to pressure her like that? Is she obligated to tell guests why there won’t be alcohol at her wedding? If not, should she still inform them ahead of time that there won’t be any alcohol at the event? If you were in her shoes, how would you navigate this situation?
