You may have heard one of the ‘golden rules’ of dining out that restaurant workers preach, which is: “If you can’t afford to tip your servers, you can’t afford to eat out.”

While there are many level-headed adults who understand this etiquette, a lot of kids and young teenagers don’t.

One TikTok user went viral in the fall after posting a video about one of the worst waitressing experiences she had while pregnant.

Madelyn (@madelynxtaylor) worked as a waitress while she was pregnant and recalled most of the customers in her restaurant being very kind and giving her generous tips for working in her condition.

However, one evening, she had one of the worst customer interactions ever. It wasn’t with adults; it was with four teens.

Four girls were seated in Madelyn’s section and immediately wanted to start ordering off the kids’ menu even though she could tell they were older than the kids’ menu’s specified age. She tried to politely ask the girls to order off the regular menu, and they snapped at her, telling her they were “obviously 12” and had just gotten back from their seventh-grade dance.

After going back and forth with the girls for a while, she realized there was no getting through to them, so she took down their kids’ menu orders.

The girls continued to be a pain for Madelyn, trying to ‘hack’ the menu by asking for cups with ice so they could pour their own drinks and flipping her off while she was helping other customers.

The four girls’ bill came out to around $15, and they took their rudeness to the next level when it was time to pay.

“On the receipt, they signed, ‘no tip,’ with hearts and smiley faces,” Madelyn recalled.

“They were so mean throughout my entire time serving them. So when I saw that ‘no tip’ stuff on there, I was livid and actually really hurt.”

Madelyn eventually snapped and decided to confront the girls. She asked them if leaving no tip made them feel good. She let them know she was seven months pregnant and that waitressing was her only job, the only way she was making money for her baby.

As Madelyn confronted the girls, one of their moms came over, looking as if she was ready to fight. Madelyn pulled out the girls’ receipt and explained to the mom why she was so upset.

“At this point, I’m getting emotional, and I’m starting to visibly shake, and tears are coming out,” says Madelyn.

“I’m not sobbing or anything; I’m just kind of upset.”

The girl’s mom had zero remorse for Madelyn and told her to stop crying and that she had to “leave.” Madelyn simply had to walk away with tears streaming down her face. Unfortunately, the mean group didn’t leave after that.

They sat at the front of the restaurant to wait for their ride home and said horrible things about her the whole time. They threatened to “report her to corporate,” which never resulted in anything.

Thankfully, some kind-hearted customers who witnessed the interaction gave Madelyn some extra money, so she didn’t go home empty-handed. Nonetheless, she was shaken up and didn’t understand why those girls had to be so mean.

If you ever worked as a server, were you ever not tipped for ridiculous reasons?
