This 52-year-old man has two sons, who are 36 and 17-years-old. His youngest son is a high school senior, and his oldest son works as a dentist.

He received a promotion at work when his youngest son was 5, and he began earning more income than ever.

Because of that, he and his wife chose to set up a college fund for their youngest son. Unfortunately, they didn’t have enough money for their oldest son’s college education.

So far, their youngest son received acceptance letters to two schools. He received the second letter last week.

Understandably, his son was thrilled, and the whole family was so proud. After graduation, his son is unsure of which direction he wants to go, but he knows he’d like to study something in the medical field or law.

He and his wife hadn’t told their youngest son that they had a college fund set up for him, but after his son received the second acceptance letter in the mail, his wife thought that they should talk to their son about it, and he felt like this was good timing.

During the conversation, their son was so shocked at how much money they’d saved for his college education that he asked if they were telling him the truth.

He and his wife assured him they were telling him the truth, adding that even though they knew the money wouldn’t pay for all his college-related expenses, it would cover a significant portion.

Later, he and his wife told their son that he should get a job soon to start putting his own earnings into the college fund, and their son thought this would be a smart idea and said he planned to begin job searching.

Their son was incredibly grateful they saved so much money for his college education. He and his wife felt proud and elated to see their son so elated, and their son was excited to tell his older brother about the second college acceptance letter.

After his two sons spoke on the phone, his oldest son called him a while afterward. Immediately after answering the phone, it was obvious that his oldest son had been crying.

His son asked if his younger brother was in the room or if he was alone. When he told him no one else was in the room, he asked his son what was happening. He was worried that his son had been crying.

“My oldest son continued to cry and told me that he was tired of his brother getting everything handed to him,” he said.

“He told me it’s hard to pretend to be happy for his brother when he had to work for everything he had.”

Stunned by his oldest son’s perspective, he told him how sorry he was, explaining that years ago, he and his wife didn’t have the money to afford what they could now.

He then told his son that he and his wife were providing things for their youngest son that they couldn’t give him when he was growing up.

“My oldest then asked me why we kept him if we couldn’t afford to keep him. He then said that watching his brother get all the things he wanted as a child hurt. He said that if we couldn’t afford him, we should have just given him up for adoption,” he explained.

He was devastated by his oldest son’s words, and he also began sobbing. In his view, he’d tried to be as loving and supportive as he could to his oldest son, even if he couldn’t provide him with what he’d been able to give his youngest son.

It broke his heart to know that his oldest son felt like he would have preferred for another family to have adopted him.

Even though he attempted to say sorry once more, expressing how much he loved him, his son hung up on him, which upset him even more.

“I tried to call him again multiple times to explain myself, but he just sent me a text saying, ‘I will call you back when I’m ready to talk. Please just stop calling me,'” he shared.

After the phone call, he explained what happened to his wife, and she began sobbing, too. She reached for her phone to call their son, but before she tried calling him, he told her their son didn’t want to hear from them for a while.

The phone call with his oldest son happened a week ago, and they still haven’t heard from him. Normally, he and his wife talk to their son every couple of days, and they’ve been crying themselves to sleep every night since their son told them he would rather have been adopted by another family.

What advice would you give him?
