The “Megalosaurus” Was The First Dinosaur To Receive A Scientific Name After Fossils Of This Reptilian Giant Were Discovered In England In 1824

Some bones that were thought to belong to the Megalosaurus were actually from different creatures, and then other pieces of the Megalosaurus also went missing.

The task of piecing the puzzle together was an arduous one. Eventually, it became irrelevant to new studies of dinosaurs.

In the early 21st century, Roger Benson, a paleontologist at the American Museum of Natural History, was able to create a modern description of the Megalosaurus.

He worked on putting together its skeleton, keeping and adding parts that were definitely from the Megalosaurus while removing bones that were from other dinosaurs.

Although the skeleton was still unfinished, at least experts knew without a doubt which remains belonged to the Megalosaurus.

Hopefully, further research can lead to the discovery of more Megalosaurus fossils. Any new findings could provide information about how the animal moved, how large it grew, and even how it may have reproduced.
